arrow Beta Patch Update

For those not familiar with the history of the Beta patch, here is a brief summary —

In early 2002, Spadge recruited me to work on an Official Patch for Worms Armageddon — I was honored to accept. This culminated in the Beta 2 patch that everyone is familiar with by now.

The original plan was that I would do the job at Team17 HQ in England. This didn't work out. Instead, I have done my work at home, submitting it remotely.

I took a long break roughly after Beta 2 was released, doing very little with W:A for quite a while. In the meantime, the Beta Patch has become ubiquitous. Perhaps some people have forgotten that it is a Beta, seeing how it hasn't changed for so long.

Well, the sabbatical did me good. A bit over a month ago the inspiration collided with me head-on, to continue work on Worms Armageddon! I have gotten a lot done so far. Here are some highlights:

  • Game sessions are recorded to files and can be played back later. This is not like recording a video... it is the actual moves that are saved, which means the files are small and the playback is smooth and fully scrollable, just like the real thing. Speed can be controlled and the chat can be viewed.
  • Full colour maps can now be played online. PNG compression is used, to minimize download time. "Map lag" is no longer a problem, since maps are sent in chunks with visible progress indicators.
  • Map previews/thumbnails are anti-aliased for a smooth, informative appearance. All types of maps are now visible as a thumbnail preview, eliminating guesswork.
  • Gameplay bugs are fixed, including: girder-anywhere cheat; lock-up after a timeout in placement; loss of worm selection and/or weapons in multi-round games
  • Backwards compatibility. People using the latest W:A version will be able to play with people who still haven't upgraded from a previous beta. The newer versions will emulate older gameplay logic where necessary to ensure compatibility and synchronisation.
  • Many rough edges in the GUI front end are smoothed over; for example, scroll bars and buttons are much improved, and chat bars get the default focus, eliminating the need for an extra mouse click.
Whilst I continue to work, things are being arranged at Team17, and gears put into motion. Cleanair is being released from the project, and his source collected; this will mean freedom in handling the server end of things. And, the future release cycle is being sorted and planned. Expect further updates on this.

Wormingly,
Deadcode / David

Call me synical but....

T17 have been saying that the client side code has been ready for ages now. Fair enough, they're giving Cleanair the boot, but I still don't have any faith that the server side code - something that has been 'in progress' for well over 3 years now, is going to go anywhere.

I'd like to be wrong, but I'm not holding mine or anyone else's breath.

You spend 3 years demanding updates, you get one, and you don't believe it? What do you people want?

They want to be told that the project has been abandoned, so that they can believe it and have a reason to ***** at Team17.

The game recording feature will be nice, people will be able to record tournament finals for everyone to watch and things like that. Who is doing the server side stuff?

Things have been happening in the background for a while although I've not posted about it, since we wanted to just get it sorted and release it.

We've been wrestling control of various elements back that will allow us to move on with some pace. Look out for further updates in the forum and possibly a new section.

It's still planned to unite the WA/WWP communities, yes.

Thats gonna be interesting as of how you can get Wormpot in... I hope not. It would be better if people who have W;a and wwp to connect to each other rahter than wwp to take w;a server.. if you know what I mean.

Well excuse me for being cynical as well but so far I don't see a download link to anything, and as you say we've been waiting 3 years and we're still waiting! The only reason you'll get any positive responses now is cos you've got deadcode involved (cheers David btw)

Us people want an update, the long overdue one

New color maps

I don't imagine color maps will be backwards compatible? If not, that'll be one way I can keep non-patched people out of my games... heh

Can we get the specific PNG format that maps will need to be saved in? Or will it be compatible with all types of PNG?

You're quite right, color maps are not backwards compatible. If a host loads one, and there are non-upgraded people joined, they see a message in place of a map (telling them to upgrade). The offending user(s) are flagged to the host who then has a choice either to boot them or choose a compatible map.

To load, the PNG must be 1920x696, palettized to no more than 65 colors, where color number zero is black. When a map is saved using the map editor, metadata is attached (such as soil texture, water level and random seeds) but if the metadata is not found when loading, it will created.

That's awesome news! Really great ideas! I hope beta3 will be released soon, or will it be already 3.5 final?

I have got 2 questions:
1. Is there going to be an option to enable / disable rope knocking?
2. Is there going to be a message to press page down when someone writes something during a game. I just don't like when noobs join games and they don't know how to chat and therefore you can't tell them the rules.

I've only followed the odd bit of news regarding the Patch, primarily because I'm not particulaely bothered about it, but I do know cleanair was... shall we say "unreliable". When did he get the boot?

.: Edit :.
Oh, and from what Deadcode has said, I now have a reason to actually get more involved in the "WHER R TEH PACTH" debate. This looks promising!

The second one is pretty funny, I have seen various map's which have the text: press page down to open the chat panel or similar, though either they don't care, or they can't find the key for it.

Correct, I don't play W:A. I have WWP, though, so this patch is, in fact, going to do rather more for me than it is for you. I don't play that much, though, so the patch delays annoy me a lot less than the W:A community's incessant whining. We all know you're waiting. We all know it's been a while. I don't need to read about it everywhere.

I don't even see how it helps. You don't think that Deadcode had forgotten to do any work for a few months, saw the forum, and thought, "oh, yeah, the patch! I knew I was meant to be doing something!" do you?

I don't mind if you complain, but it annoys me when you immediately respond to an update by refuting it then complain at me for pointing this out to you.

I see your point, Alex. Unfortunately Andrew was probably thinking more along the lines of "It's not like Deadcode forgot the patch existed". He didn't - he took a break. There's a difference. I forgot to process an order at work this morning. I didn't take a break, I forgot to. There's a difference there, methinks.

An interesting way to do Tutorials would be to set up an online game with a friend and rather than use the IRC to mock each other's l4m3 n00b sk1llz, say what you're about to do, what you've just done, and then insult each other's l4m3 n00b sk1llz. pwned. Or something.

Actually I think it depends how you interpret what Deadcode said, so clearly only Deadcode can resolve this debate

CleanAir was T17 staff, worked on server stuff, should have been helping with B3 but wasn't; has now been replaced or something.

And considering Dave joined the community through playing games, and then made Silkworm, and then helped with the Beta patches yes he plays Worms - I used to play him regularly (and we agreed to start it again - Woo! ). The Team17 scheme rules.

Also monkey.

Community: I still don't think it will ever be released.

Look at what we've done so far indeed. its taken them 3 years to insert a few minor fixes. It seems your fooling yourself into thinking theyve been hard at work this whole time. The reason why I have assumed my cynical additude toward the whole release of the patch is the simple fact that spadge informed the worms community not once, but twice that the patch would be out within a month and ranks would return. The fact that they didnt speaks volumes. So you expect me, an active part of this community, to swallow this news all over like ive done twice before? The only glimmer of hope i have is the whole deadcode aspect to this project. Ive played deadcode, oh, going on 3 years now, on and off, and hes been nothing short of reliable in his word. He'd promised a quick solution to the silkworm problem, with a patch issued promptly, effectively killing off silkworm forever. Mr. Taylor, I doubt you know as much as youd like to assume over this whole issue, but when reality sets in, you know little to nothing about the WA community. Therefore, I'd like to ask you to repectfully leave this conversation of peers. Yamming on about something you know nothing about signals a lack of intellegence. And we dont want people thinking the worst of you. So please, I plead, take a leave of abscence from this and any other thread relating to the beta patch(es) unless you have something of substance to contribute to the conversation. thanks.

too bad my copy of worms armageddon is broken, and that worms armageddon seems to be one of the hardest games to make a working cd copy of... cause i sure as hell aint gonna pay for it again, just because the cd broke in the cd player

edit: oh yeah, this is good news, finally something is actually being said

now let's see if the only two important issues are gonna get fixed too...

Actually I think it depends how you interpret what Deadcode said, so clearly only Deadcode can resolve this debate
Quite correct, Run I took a break, but I was thinking about the patch quite a lot throughout. And playing WA throughout (though under an alias). So when I started again, I had a fresh perspective. Or something like that.

Deadcode, could you please answer these questions I already asked earlier:

1. Is there going to be an option to enable / disable rope knocking?
2. Is there going to be a message to press page down when someone writes something during a game. I just don't like when noobs join games and they don't know how to chat and therefore you can't tell them the rules.

I don't think such a message will be necessary; it will just be an added annoyance to every person that's been on wormnet more than once (aka almost everyone). Plus, why is it that you can't tell them before the game starts?

Oh and by the way Deadcode... I've started making a RR map in color, I think I'm going to dedicate it to you =)

Ok, sorry. I'm just not too fond at announcing things that are planned -- I prefer saying what I have actually done so far.

This is very definately planned, along with other options.

How about if by default, it is displayed until said newbie presses Page Down a certain number of times and/or types a certain number of lines? (And after that it would be remembered permanently in the registry not to print the message.)

Aw, thanks I look forward to seeing it, Tony.

Hey :)

This definatly sounds cool, a new patch will be great to improve the gameplay and "richness" of features provided.

I have some suggestions that you may/may not of thought of :) [hehe this post might get big]

- Mod Support :D ...... (its far-fetched but hey)... some sort of high level API of some sort, so developers can produce programs which are integrated with the worms game, instead of the 'key senders' and macros commonly used today. It would have to be carefully planned so it prevented usage for malicious/cheating purposes... but wud be great for say, clan league software.. or a always-on-top weps list.. and other stuff :) [and would possibly prevent crying for another patch when we want a certain feature adding]

- Boot *Voting*.... Adding boot support to the client is a 'responsibility'. No offense to the l33t amongst us, but you'll boot a newbie on their first turn given chance (how are they meant to learn??). Boot voting wud be a more 'democratic' method of adding the boot support some ppl want.

- All the features u've proposed currently ;)

- Offline Rope Knocking :) :) ... i play worms on LAN alot. Would be nice if it played like it is on the net. (rope knocking is often the difference between winning and loosing :P)

- Keep it W:A. If u know what i mean. I dont wanna install the update and find that my old schemes wont work, or silly things like that :) [no drastic changes of whats already there is what im trying to say, frankly i like my worms as it is]

- Maybe some sort of 'real' game-type support. Worms is worms... we make the rules in an online game and ppl play to them. However worms doesnt actually know what the rules of the game is, to it, its a normal match. I think it wud be great if worms knew the rules of roper, shoppa, fort etc.. and the game logic acted accordingly, knowing when someone has cowed etc.. and displaying A lil dialog (CS/HL style) with the rules and objectives of the game-type when the match begins. Also it wud be cool if the game-types where 'catogorized' with an icon or something in the server list on wN.

Anyway, they are my ideas to the development of the new patch. :) :)

Keep up the good work Deadcode, your contribution to the W:A Community its of course no doubt appriciated by a great many peeps... i hope my ideas have maybe inspired some items of your work.

- Lexx.

[P.S. - To Team17 - i lost this post because it had too many smilies. ur darn forum wudnt let me retrieve it.... I had to reconstruct the data packets sent by IE to get it back ... ! plz fix this]

@ Deadcode: About the message "Press page down to chat!": Wouldn't it be a good idea to show the message "Press page down to chat!" until he or she presses page down for the first time and then the message disappears. That would mean that everybody gets the message "Press page down to chat!" at the beginning of EACH game and only when you press page down once the message disappears. Every noob must try to find the page down key until the "annoying" message is removed. Until end of game this message would be gone and at the beginning of the next game it would appear again. This would people make remember how to chat, even when they didn't play the game for quite a while. Furthermore this would ensure that every person who plays worms on the PC also knows how to chat and not only the person who has seen the message (in contrary to your suggestion). What do you think about this idea?

An option for rope knocking will be awesome!

I have got another suggestion for beta3: When w:a beta3 comes out then please make a screen or something which informs all worms players that the new patch is available after them having connected to a wormnet server. A "splash screen" would be better than simple changing the MOTD. Many people won't know it otherwise, consequently they won't download it. I think it would be much easier to force everybody to download beta3 instead of making beta3 backwards compatible. If everybody has got the same version of the patch, there would be less technical problems IMO.

If you are going to make beta3 backwards compatible: When a beta3 user plays with a beta2 user, would there be the bugs of beta2?

I think it will work online and offline. Am I right, deadcode? Will it be a normal scheme option?

Lexx— Some excellent ideas you've raised. Thanks for putting them all in one place. :-)

Some specific points (reordered a bit and italicized instead of quoted for compactness):

- Mod Support :D

Whew, talk about tearing down boundaries :-) obviously this would have to be done very carefully. Someday, maybe.

- Keep it W:A. If u know what i mean.

Indeed I do, and I've been holding it foremost as a guiding philosophy in my patchery.

- Maybe some sort of 'real' game-type support.

At first I thought you were talking about... {gasp}... real-time play, and was relieved to see this wasn't the case ;-) Support for hardcoded rules is certainly something I have planned.

- Boot *Voting*

You are not the first to have this idea, but nonetheless thanks for reiterating it, as it's certainly an important issue. I do think that support for hardcoded rules will make it less important, since it will be impossible to cow. If implemented at all, the vote should be unanimous (minus one, of course). But let me add that I'm very, very, very hesitant to add something like this, and if I did, it would be as an experiment and would be confined to a single beta (boot people with current or older versions but not newer ones), so that it'd be possible to stuff the genie back in the bottle if the experiment didn't go well.

Keep up the good work Deadcode, your contribution to the W:A Community its of course no doubt appriciated by a great many peeps... i hope my ideas have maybe inspired some items of your work.

Thanks Lexx! Your post has indeed clarified some things further in my mind, and perhaps even inspired me a bit more.

The real solution is staring you in the face. Stop smiling so much! :-P

Seriously, though. Wow, you keep a packet logger going all the time? It's a good idea, but don't the logs get unwieldly in size? I just copy my posts to the clipboard... not as elegant a solution, but it works ;)

Excellent idea; thanks. I think that's how I'm going to implement it.

There's a very good reason for backwards compatibility to be retained. Even if everyone upgrades at once, there will still be old recordings that would not replay otherwise. And since backwards compatibility is required for that, why not keep it for online play?

Yes. The host and players are notified of this before the game starts. The beta2 user is identified and the host is given a choice whether to boot him or go ahead with the emulated beta2 bugs.

hehe yesh, i usually copy large posts to the clipboard but i forgot :(

And no, my packet logger wasnt running at the time. I simply refreshed the page which said i had to many smilys, Internet explorer re-sent the the post free of charge :P... which i picked up with my packet logger. (cos hell i wasnt typing all that out again!!)

Anyway, yeah, im glad i was of some help :)
And one last note... if u do add hardcoded rulez, definatly implment perhaps an option to create new 'hardcoded' rules... (some sort of proggy that builds an expression maybe :).... like 'Attack From Rope AND Crate Before Attack AND NOT Holy Donkey :P AND NOT Rope Knock)
[I'd be happy to make a frontend for such a feature :P]

**copies this post to the clipboard**
hehe :D ...
